Dr. Sujit Kumar Brahmochary
IIMC was started by Dr. Sujit Kumar Brahmochary who was given the opportunity to attend school and follow his dream of becoming a doctor. Due to his bright mind and perseverance, he obtained a medical degree and then with a scholarship from the Belgium Red Cross went on to specialise in paediatrics in Belgium.
While living in Europe Dr. Brahmochary realised that as a doctor he would be more useful in India than in Belgium so he decided to return to Calcutta and work with Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity as the Medical In-Charge at Sishu Bhawan.
After working with the Missionaries of Charity for two years, in 1989 Dr. Brahmochary founded IIMC and decided to commit his life to helping people living in the rural areas of West Bengal who had no access to a doctor or health care.
From humble beginnings treating 20 children a day, he has built the organisation to now provide education, health care and housing to more than 300,000 families a year.
IIMC is now a respected and internally renowned organisation that enjoys the support of 650 full time volunteers and up to 400 international volunteers each year. The organisation is fully funded by donations.
Dr. Brahmochary continues to be passionate about justice, education, health, equality, freedom and the eradication of poverty in India. He continues to be inspired by his mentors who include the late Mother Teresa and also Mahatma Gandhi who said, “Whenever you are in doubt apply the full test. Look on the face of the poorest and weakest person you have seen and ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to them, will it restore them to a control of their own life and destiny”
Dr. Brahmochary extends the invitation for you to join him and the hundreds of volunteers and supporters of IIMC to continue increasing child and maternal health, literacy, peace and solidarity in India.
